just in:Buhari flags off campaign in Uyo, says “we’ve defeated Boko Haram, met all our campaign promises" - Naijahitplay

Naijahitplay: Forthe umpteenth time, President Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed that the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have been defeated in the North East region of the country.

Buhari made the statement at Uyo,  Akwa Ibom State, while flagging of 2019 presidential campaign of All Progressive Congress (APC).

The President, who was flanked by the party’s stalwarts, maintained that the insurgents have been dislodged from Borno and Kebbi States which were their major strongholds before he came into power.

From left APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomohle APC Governorship Aspirant Isima Ekwere President Muhammadu Buhari and former Gov Senator Godswill Akpabio at the official flag off of President Muhammadu Buhari 2019 Presidential Campaign in Uyo Yesterday

He said “I am standing here to express my gratitude and appreciation to the party for organizing this get-together to start   the campaign against next year. If you could recall in 2015 when we traveled the length and breadth of this country and we based our campaign on three fundamental issues, -security, economy and fighting corruption. I want those who want to challenge us at any level,, at any constituency to doubt our contributions towards our undertakings.

“First, insecurity in the North East has been   really defeated in the sense that when we came we met Boko haram in about 17 local governments in Borno and Yobe states.   They are not physically holding any local government now. They resorted to indoctrinating our young ones especially girls.  They braced them up in explosives and instructed them  to expose themselves in churches, in Mosques, market places and motor parks but    I assure you that we are going to clear them off in our county.”

The President said that Nigerians would always be informed on the progress being made to recover stolen funds and that ‘’Nigerians wont regret voting us into office”.

He noted that his administration has delivered on his promises in 2015 hinged on security, economy and fighting corruption and urged the electorate to give him another term in office to consolidate on his achievements.

National leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu took a swipe at former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, describing his comment on the 2019 budget as ‘’shallow and full of contradictions”.

He reiterated that it was only the APC government that would give hope to the Nigerian people and called on the electorate to re-elect him and other candidates of the party across the country.

He said: “To bring that hope, strong determination, we are building on a new foundation and that foundation is for you, the youths, the elderly, and tomorrow’s children. Fight for your future, rise and fight corruption. Fight the 16years that gave you 16years of darkness. If only the PDP would have concentrated on one thing only, electricity, without which there can be no industrialization, without which there can be no development, it would have been better. They said they want to come back. We are not bringing you back. No backward  move in Nigeria, no backward move in Akwa Ibom.

“ We will work with you to build a Nigeria that you can rely on ,a Nigeria that is not corrupt. Corruption is the greatest enemy, and the cancer of development in this country. We will continue to fight it, renew the hope of Nigerians and build a greater nation”

National Chairman, Adam Oshomhole, accused the People’s Democratic Party of engaging in mudslinging instead of campaigning on issues, blaming the PDP for putting in economic quagmire.

‘’PDP has already put Nigeria on notice that Atiku will sell NNPC. And South-South will not support a government that will privatize our resources”, he said.

National Vice Chairman, South-South, Ntufam Hilliard Etta , prayed that Buhari should defeat Atiku, stating that   Buhari has revolutionized the Agriculture sector   and also reeled out other achievements such as the school feeding programme, construction of the second Niger Bridge, roads, railways and the increase of Police salary.

‘’He is doing so much . First they wanted our lion dead , he did not die , he became stronger. Then they coined a story that our lion is a Jubril from Sudan ,but their enterprise failed”, he said.

Also speaking, Director General,   Buhari Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Ameachi said, “ I am sure that Nigerians have not heard me for a very long time and the reason  you have not heard me is that you don’t talk when you are busy. We have been relatively busy in the past four years.

“About this time four years ago we were running round the country begging Nigerians to change the leadership of the country. We promised just three things. We promised to improve the economy, to enhance security, and we promised to fight corruption. Anybody who said we promised that fuel prize will fall must be a magician. We are not voodoo economists. It was very clear what was wrong. We got in and saw the challenges; we never knew that they had stolen all the money.

“ And when we got in we were mindful of the promises that we made. We commenced that action, believing that Nigerians will know that changes don’t come easily. Nigerians know that before we came to power as governor of Rivers state I could not sleep in Kano, because Kano , Abuja were attacked. Since we have been in government till now  attack had been in Borno, not outside Borno. So have we made any improvement in security? The answer is yes.

“When we came, things were extremely bad. The factors that we met in terms of economy led to economic recession. We didn’t have a choice but to fight that economic recession. World Bank said that we will not come out of the recession till after three years, we came out of recession after ten months. We promised to fight corruption, are we fighting corruption, the answer is yes.

For his part, Senator Godswill Akpabio commended the President for choosing the state to flag off the campaign and gave the assurance that the party would sweep the zone, noting that ‘’this election is all about integrity”.

‘’It is all about integrity versus others. He has integrity to run. We are going to run this election on the basis of development. . They should hand over”, he said.

The high point of the rally was the presentation of the party flags to the four governorship candidate of the South-South, namely, Obong Nsima Ekere,   Akwa Ibom state; Senator John Eno, Cross River, Chief Great Ogboru, Delta and Arc. Tony Cole, Rivers State.

Breaking news: Ex-President Shehu Shagari is dead, aged 93

Shagari passed away at the National Hospital Abuja on Friday. He was 93 years old.

The news was broken by the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on his Twitter handle.

Tambuwal had tweeted:

I regret to Announce the death of former President Shehu Shagari who just passed away at National Hospital Abuja. May his Soul Rest in Peace.

    — Aminu W. Tambuwal (@AWTambuwal) December 28, 2018

Shehu Usman Shagari was born in 1925 in Shagari village founded by his great-grandfather, Ahmadu Rufa’i, who was also the Village Head, and took the name Shagari as his family name. His father’s name was Aliyu and his mother’s name was Mariamu.

Shagari started his education in a Quranic school and then went to live with relatives at a nearby town, where, between 1931 and 1935, he attended Yabo Elementary School; and between 1936 and 1940, he went to Sokoto for middle school, and then from 1941-1944, he attended Kaduna College.

Between 1944 and 1952, Shagari attended the Teacher Training College, in Zaria, Kaduna State;and from 1953-1958, he worked as a visiting teacher at Sokoto Province.

He was also a member of the Federal Scholarship Board from 1954-1958.

According to the Wiki citation on him, the late ex-president entered politics in 1951 when he became the secretary of the Northern People’s Congress in Sokoto, Nigeria, a position he held until 1956.

General Olusegun Obasanjo, who was military Head of State had handed over to Shagari in 1979, and he was in office till 1983.

Before then, Shagari had served as a federal minister and federal commissioner between 1958 and 1975.

Shagari was made the Turaki of the Fula Sokoto Caliphate in 1962 by the Sultan of Sokoto, Siddiq Abubakar III.

He worked as a teacher for a brief period before entering politics in 1951 and, in 1954, he was elected to the federal House of Representatives representing Sokoto West.

In 1958, he was appointed as parliamentary secretary — a post he left in 1959 for Prime Minister  Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. He later served as the Federal Minister for Commerce and Industries.

Between 1959 and 1960, Shagari was made the Federal Minister for Economic Development. Between 1960 and 1962, he was moved to the Pensions Ministry as the Federal Minister for Pensions.

From 1962-1965, he became the Federal Minister for Internal Affairs. And from 1965 up until the first military coup in January 1966, Shagari was the Federal Minister for Works.

In 1967, he was appointed the Secretary for Sokoto Province Education Development Fund. From 1968-1969, he served as Commissioner for Establishments.

After the civil war, from 1970-1971, he was appointed by then military head of state Gen. Yakubu Gowon as the federal Commissioner for Economic Development, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.

In 1978, he became a founding member of the National Peoples Party. In 1979, Shagari was chosen by the party as the presidential candidate for general election that year, which he won, becoming the president.

Shagari ran for a second four-year term in 1983 and won the general election. However, on 31 December 1983, he was overthrown by then Maj. -Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

He was Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, GCFR.

Abule-Egba fire: Four suspected vandals arrested - Naijahitplay

Abule-Egba fire: Four suspected vandals arrested - Naijahitplay
Four suspected pipeline vandals alleged to have sparked up the fire that razed at least 100 houses , 100 shops and 50 cars in Abule-Egba and Agege areas of Lagos State, last Wednesday, have been arrested.

This is just as the Police in Lagos have urged the alleged prime suspect and sponsor of the arrested suspects(names withheld) to make himself accessible to the Police, to answer questions bordering on his alleged involvement in the incident that has rendered several families homeless.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Chike Oti, who confirmed the arrest, said: “During interrogation, the four suspects gave vivid account of how the fire that started from a vandalised petroleum pipe engulfed a fraction of Abule-Egba community and spread to parts of Agege area, destroying properties worth millions of Naira.

“They also mentioned one Prince Ewenla as their ring leader.

“Based on this, the Command extended invitation to him (Ewenla) at his last known address but found out that he has fled to Ogun State.

“He is hereby advised to come out of hiding and  report himself to Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja  or to the nearest police station in the state to defend himself.”

Why we killed Chief of Defence Staff Alex Badeh – Suspect Reveal : Video

An armed robbery suspect, Shuaibu Rabi, says he took part in the murder of the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.),because they wanted to rob him.

Rabi said this while being interrogated by policemen in Hausa language.

Our correspondent obtained a video clip of the interrogation on Thursday.

The Police had earlier on Thursday confirmed the arrest of five suspects in connection with the killing of Badeh in Nasarawa State on December 18, 2018.

The force disclosed that two principal suspects and three others were apprehended for the heinous crime.

Rabi, who is one of the suspects said he and his friends received information that Badeh was in possession of a huge sum of money which he wanted to use in purchasing a parcel of land in Nasarawa State.

The 25-year-old suspect said after killing Badeh, he and his friends stole a bag which contained a huge sum of money.

Rabi said, “What happened was that, on a certain day, my elder brother went to a market, where he met with one Churuma. Churuma told him that he got information that an old soldier (Badeh) wanted to buy a parcel of land but would be buying the land in cash.

“He said we would trail the soldier on that day and we would block him and collect the money. So, on that day, when we saw him coming, Churuma  signalled to us that it was him. Some of us stayed behind his vehicle in case he would want to reverse while Churuma stayed in front.

“But when he (Badeh) saw Churuma with a gun, he did not do like he wanted to reverse, he attempted to hit Churuma with his car but Churuma dodged to the side and then opened fire on him.

“After that, we opened the car and found a bag of money and went with it. When they opened the bag, the money was beyond what I had ever seen before.”

When asked if the money was in naira or foreign currency, the suspect said it was in naira.

He added that they were able to abduct Badeh’s friend who was in the car.

The former CDS was killed in the evening of December 18, 2018 while returning from his farm between Koso and Kugwaru communities.

See the video:

The former CDS’ four military guards who provided security were said to have been a few kilometres away when the attack took place.

At the time of his death, Badeh was being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly diverting N3bn from the accounts of the air force.

The former CDS had forfeited money and choice properties to the Federal Government before his death.

Police believe that Badeh decided to carry out transactions in cash because all his accounts had been frozen by the EFCC.

The PUNCH had reported on Wednesday that the police had nabbed some suspected killers of the ex-CDS.

The Police spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, disclosed in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, that efforts were ongoing to track down other accomplices.

He explained that the investigation into the killing was being carried out by the Joint Police Investigation Team set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

He said, “Two principal suspects who participated in the killing of the former Chief of Defence Staff and three other suspects have been arrested in connection with the heinous crime. They are now in police custody undergoing investigation.

“The investigation into the killing of the former CDS is being intensified to arrest other suspects still at large.”

Jimoh stated that the suspects were not paraded so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation, adding that the force would not relent until all the perpetrators were brought to justice.

Oshiomhole was in Imo to insult on me — Governor Rochas Okorocha

Owerri—Govenor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State yesterday said that the national chairman of  All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole came to Imo state to rain insults on him.

Okorocha stated this through a release to newsmen in Owerri by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo.

Recall that Oshiomhole visited Imo state last week   for the campaign flag-off ceremony of Imo APC governorship candidate, Senator Hope Uzodimma, where he accused Okorocha of anti-party activities among other allegations.

According to Okorocha in a statement, “We won’t allow Oshiomhole to eat his cake and still have it. And we start this way:

“Adams Oshiomhole was governor in Edo State for eight years. Rochas Okorocha has been governor in Imo for less than eight years. We challenge Oshiomhole to publish his achievements in Edo State for the eight years he was governor and let Rochas publish his own achievements in Imo in less than eight years and let Nigerians judge who failed as governor.

“If Oshiomhole fails to accept this challenge, we won’t have any other option than to conclude that he is just a noise maker.

Buhari backs Uzodinma for Imo governorship race

“Oshiomhole has been talking and working to fulfill his own part of whatever deal he has with Chief Hope Uzodinma. He is acting his own part and in doing that, has thrown caution to the wind.”

Okorocha said that he expected,”  that the chairman of a party who came for the campaign of a governorship candidate of his party would have used the opportunity offered by the event to market the candidate. But in this case, Oshiomhole talked about Governor Okorocha and carefully skipped talking about the candidate because he knows where the problem lies with the candidate.

“All the media reports on what Oshiomhole said at the rally were all about Okorocha. He consciously avoided telling Imo people why they should opt for Uzodinma at the poll in 2019 or why he chose him as the guber candidate of the party in the state.”

On one of the troubling issues raised by Oshiomhole which bordered on payment of workers salaries in the state, Okorocha said that  “information has long been in the public domain that Governor Okorocha paid the December 2018 salary in November 2018 and has also given each of the workers N10,000 as Christmas bonus.”

I don’t fear President Buhari, I fear only God – Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun

Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on Saturday said there was no truth in the media report (not THE PUNCH) that quoted him as saying he fears President Muhammadu.

“To put the record straight, I never said I fear President Muhammadu Buhari. I only said I fear God. I don’t fear President Buhari,” Amosun said during the 2018 Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons organised by the state government in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The governor had earlier been quoted to have said that he fears God and Buhari while addressing leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta shortly after the National Working Committee inaugurated the state caretaker committee.

The NWC had on Friday inaugurated the caretaker committee for the state to replace the embattled state executive led by Chief Derin Adebiyi.
While reacting to the media report, Amosun said he was shocked to read on the pages of newspapers on Saturday that he fears God and Buhari.

He said, “You know this is our time as politicians, a time when politicians will call black, blue.

“Yesterday (Friday), I held a  meeting with our people, and the way I started was that, I was brought up to fear God.

“But I saw newspapers this morning (Saturday) that Amosun says he fears  God and Buhari.

“No! It is only God I fear, the one that is alive, the only one that will say a thing no one can change. That is the only God that I fear.

“Of course, I respect President Buhari. I love him and he loves me too. I know him, he fears God because he is from God. He doesn’t beg for respect, he commands and earns it. So, it is only God that I fear.”

In his message, the Secretary-General, Anglican Communion Worldwide, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, attributed  Nigeria’s problems to what he described as scanty knowledge of both the Bible and the Quran.

He said politicians were using religion negatively to divide the country and he also enjoined citizens to refuse such act.

He said, “Our major problem in this country today is that so many people have scanty knowledge and understanding of the Quran and the Bible and they tend to propagate that little understanding of the word of God and anyone who does not agree with them will be seen as an enemy.

“For the Christians, the real problem is sin because it was sin that caused reincarnation and that is why Jesus came as sacrifice and as ransom for men.

“Jesus is a word that came in human flesh and as a result, he is a messenger and his mission is to save the people from their sins.

“Meanwhile, God expects us all to humble ourselves but our politicians are negatively using religion to divide us in this country and the time has come for all us to say no to them.”

Breaking: ‘Nigeria set for electric cars’

In preparation for mass integration of electric vehicles in Africa, PSC Solar UK, the research and development arm of PSC Industries Limited, a Lagos, Nigeria-based solar electricity and renewable energy total solutions manufacturer, has announced the introduction of EV chargers for electric vehicles in Nigeria, Ghana, Niger and Benin Republic.

The announcement was made by the company’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Patrick Owelle, at the Paris Motor Show in Paris, France, during PSC Solar UK’s exhibition on October 5, 2018.

Speaking with Sunday Vanguard, Owelle said: “As everyone is now intimately aware of the current trending revolution of electric vehicles (EV), cars, buses, trains and boats manufacturers are all competing for market share in the EV Market as most governments, the world over, are beginning to ban diesel power engines due to climate change considerations and serious noise and environmental pollution.”

Noting that the challenge posed by climate change and global warming is real and Africa must take a strong position now, the PSC Industries boss said: “The Lake Chad Basin is virtually drying up forcing migration into Europe by Africans in the region who otherwise relied on fishing and farming for their sustenance. The Ice Glaciers in Greenland are warming up and breaking off due to increase in environmental temperatures resulting from global warming. One cannot begin to imagine the disaster that will befall the earth should these glaciers melt and flood the earth.”

In a chat with Vanguard in 2012 on their electric car innovation, Professor James Omoleye, former Director, Centre for Research, Covenant University Ota, Ogun State had stated that “if you can reduce pollution in the air coming through automobiles, then you would have reduced pollution by almost 80 per cent and life on earth will be safer.””

Reeling out the benefits of electric vehicles, Owelle said the benefits of electric vehicles go beyond environmental and climate change considerations but extends to the economy too. “It makes great economic sense for car owners, fleet owners, transport companies etc., because it will cost less than N300 to recharge a vehicle for range of 500 kilometres compared to over N4,000 with petrol or diesel. Moreover, there are no real moving parts to repair in electric vehicles so the unnecessary, continuous and expensive mechanic bills will be a thing of the past.

“Electric vehicles are same as current cars, buses, trucks, etc. except that they no longer require petrol or diesel but purely powered by specially designed lithium iron phosphate battery banks. These vehicles have a range much longer than the normal petrol/diesel vehicles at up to 500 km per full charge.”

He further stated that “PSC Industries’ Electric Vehicle chargers will be the equivalent of filling stations where vehicles can be recharged much like buying fuel. The difference is that the full recharge which takes about 5 -10 minutes, could cost about N300. We have various EV chargers such as commercial, industrial, residential and mobile EV DC chargers. We have chargers to suit the residential car owner, portable/transportable chargers and large petrol station type chargers.”

He said the company plans to partner with large multinationals as well as indigenous oil firms to add these EV chargers to existing petrol stations across Nigeria.

He called on African Governments to seize the moment and not get left behind as is always the case with emerging technologies; adding that “Africa has all it takes to become a leader in this technology and not continue to depend on crude oil only as its source of revenue. There will come a time when crude oil will no longer be as attractive as it is today and we must strive to continue to open up additional income streams.

“So if you’ve started thinking about ways to reduce your carbon footprint and engage your community in sustainability efforts, electric vehicle is the way to go,” he said.

Quote: It makes great economic sense too for car owners, fleet owners, transport companies etc because it will cost less than N300 to recharge a vehicle for range of 500 kilometres compared to over N4,000 with petrol or diesel

just in:Buhari must win in 2019 for Yoruba’s chances in 2023 –Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Saturday, restated that the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election would guarantee the South-West a shot at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in 2023.

Osinbajo, who went on a house-to-house campaign in Oyo-Alaafin and held a 45-minute closed-door meeting with the Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, said the 2019 presidential election mattered to the Yoruba people of the South-West because the region had a larger interest in 2023.

The vice president was accompanied to Oyo by Governor Abiola Ajimobi; the APC governorship candidate in the state, Chief Bayo Adelabu; a former Senate Leader and the APC senatorial candidate for Oyo Central Senatorial District, Senator Teslim Folarin, among others.

Osinbajo eulogised Oba Adeyemi for his wisdom, which, he said, was secon to none in the South-West.

He said, “My visit to Kabiyesi today is a homecoming. I have never seen an Oba with the political sagacity like the Alaafin. I know this is God-given because no university teaches that.

“Kabiyesi is a man of integrity; that’s why we are following and consulting him. Everybody here will agree with me that being a Yoruba leader is not easy. That’s why leaders like Senator Ahmed Tinubu consult him in our country.

“Yoruba have a lot to contribute to Nigeria for the 2019 elections. It is for us Yoruba; if you understand, it is for us.  We are not looking at 2019, but 2023. If we don’t get it now, it may take some time again.

“We have to look forward to that; that is before us. Though there could be some challenges, but what I know about President Muhammadu Buhari is that he is an honest man. If he says he will do something, he will do it.

“If you love Nigeria, you will vote for Buhari. Corruption is the reason Nigeria is not growing, a reason why they don’t want Buhari. They are out again; they are looters. Don’t allow them.”

Osinbajo added that what the Buhari/Osinbajo presidency had been doing was to build a solid foundation for Nigeria’s actual development.

“If you want to build, you need a solid foundation first. What we are building will be good to position Nigeria for eventual development,” he added.

Also, Ajimobi urged the people of the state to vote for the APC in the next elections.

Ajimobi said, “Kabiyesi is instrumental to the success and the development we have recorded during our administration. He is a master of administration. Unarguably, this is the most ‘intellectually-intelligent’ Kabiyesi in Yorubaland.

‘The PDP and other parties do not care about the masses. These are the people and the party (APC) that are taking care of the masses.”

The Alaafin, while welcoming the vice president and his entourage to his palace, admitted that the administration of Ajimobi restored peace to the state.

While offering prayer for the vice president, Oba Adeyemi said the visit to his palace was an important step of the Buhari/Osinbajo administration.

The vice president, who had, earlier in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, inaugurated Shared Facilities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, financed by the Bank of Industry, declared that the project was a Federal Government project in collaboration with the state government.

The shared facilities centre is for fashion, style and shea butter producers, who could not afford the cost of buying the equipment in the open market.
The Managing Director of the BOI, Mr Olukayode Pitan, lauded the project, saying shared facilities would operate as one of the National MSMEs Clinics and adopt a Public Private Partnership model to guarantee success and sustainability.

Osinbajo, who noted that small scale enterprises played significant roles in the economic growth of the nation, called on traders to support Buhari’s re-election bid to enjoy more of Tradermoni, which is meant to support small scale traders.

Just in: It’s late to override President Buhari veto on electoral bill –Lawmakers

Some senators and members of the House of Representatives on Friday said it was no longer feasible to start and complete the process of overriding President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the 2018 Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Senate had faulted Buhari’s decision to withhold assent to the document, alleging that it was a ploy by the ruling All Progressives Congress to rig next year’s general elections.

They had resolved to reach out to some aggrieved APC senators in order to get the two-thirds votes needed to override the President.

But the senators appeared to have dropped the idea as of Friday afternoon when all the senators who spoke with SATURDAY PUNCH off and on record, across both parties, expressed doubts about the possibility of going ahead with the plan.

The federal lawmakers specifically cited the timing of such an action and the mood of the country as reasons the action would fail.

A prominent member of the PDP in the red chamber and Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, described the refusal of Buhari to sign the document as unfortunate.

He lamented that effort by well-meaning members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure free, fair and credible polls in 2019 had been defeated with the President’s action.

Ibrahim said, “I don’t think it’s feasible to attempt that (override Buhari’s assent) again. The President didn’t sign the bill and it is highly unfortunate because the election would have been more transparent with the new law in place.

“Obviously now, his party men in the National Assembly will toe the same line with him. So it’s almost impossible to achieve the override now.”

Also the APC member representing Oyo North in the red chamber, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, said any attempt by the PDP lawmakers to start the process of overriding the president will be too difficult because the time was too close to the general elections.

He said, “It will be exactly four weeks to the general elections by the time we will resume in January. It is a process that requires a lot of preparations, planning and lobbying.

“It (overriding the President) cannot work since we are resuming on the 16th when the election will be just a month ahead. How do we now pass an electoral act that will be used for the same election? INEC needs no distraction at this level. The time is too close.”

An opposition senator from the North-West, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also agreed that it would be difficult to commence such a process on resumption in January.

“It is not feasible because it is too close to the election. It is supposed to have been done immediately the President returned it; but honestly, the mood to carry out such an action is no longer there now.”

A senator from the South-South geopolitical zone, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said going ahead with the plan would amount to a waste of precious time.

He said, “I am not even sure that many of our colleagues would actually resume in January. So, getting the required number to override the President is simply, impossible.”

Another senator from the South-East geopolitical zone, who would also not have his name disclosed, said, “We already know that we can’t override the President again. INEC should just ensure a credible poll to avoid crisis.”

Calls made to the mobile line of the Senate spokesperson, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, did not connect and he had yet to reply to a text message sent to him on the issue as of the time of filing this report.

In this vein, some members of the House of Representatives have expressed doubt about the likelihood of applying the proposed law in the conduct of the 2019 General Elections.

Speaking with one of our correspondents on Friday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Abdulrazak Namdas, said the legislature no longer had time to either amend the bill as demanded by the President or override his veto before the elections.

Namdas said, “It is a difficult moment. The mere fact that we are on break and we won’t resume until the 16th of January, one month to our elections, I am not sure anything meaningful can come out of it.”

A senior member in the House, who did not want his name in print, also said it would be impossible to veto the bill, with the APC still maintaining majority in the chamber.

The lawmaker said, “It will not come back again, and if it does, it will die because it will be based on partisanship and the APC members will never support it. Also, because of the limited time, we cannot pass it when election is close by. It is not possible.”
